“all music is spiritual. to listen to music ….most of what we do is arbitrary. we recreate the world in our minds. but music is real because it follows the laws of the real universe. an octave is twice the vibrations of the octave below it. a fifth is a known thing. there is a cultural bias… there’s a cultural tendency, for instance, what we think of when we hear a minor chord may not be what people in india think of when they hear a minor chord. but generally speaking how that feels…it’s undeniably direct. it doesn’t have the human filter on it. and yet it is a uniquely human process. when you combine that with a lyrical message that either is supported or contrasts with the music, it’s a powerful thing.”

Om Lounge 10 / Various

$7.09 – $11.98

  • All Music Guide

The Om label is one of America’s best sources for underground downtempo electronica and nu jazz, and since 1998 the Om Lounge series has offered a consistently useful window into the type of quality and variety you can expect from the label’s catalog. The tenth volume in the series is one of the strongest yet. On the album’s opening track, Samantha James sets a high standard with her lush and gorgeous “Rise”, a laidback tune with a simple but gloriously catchy hook; impressively, almost all of the other artists meet or come close to that level of chilledout funky brilliance. Other highlight tracks include Jianda Patchen’s “Wish”, which incorporates some subtly elegant rhythmic variations in the chorus; Joey Youngman’s spare, dark and sexy “Gotta Be Love”, and Stolen Identity’s similarly slinky “Argentina”. On the less compelling side are JT Donaldson, whose relaxed “New Tempo” teeters on the brink of boring, and Simeon, whose “Not Feeling’ This” couches seriously offputting lyrics in romantic mood music (when you’re snuggling with your honey, do you think she wants to hear someone crooning “I’m not sure that I can give what you want me to… I’m not feelin’ this, babe”?). Even at its least impressive, though, this album offers plenty of good, downtempo pleasure. Recommended.

MR. GOLDFISH. Chill For Life. Out Records. Although this is only a long EP, my attention was sparked into action by comparing it to a plethora of chilled out albums that seem to be appearing on the market. Instantly the music is to my liking as it’s not only very relaxing but entertaining as well. The opening track Carousel Begins would equally be at home as the background music to a big department store or played loud in my living room. This occurrence must be classed as being very unusual and hence only music of the highest quality could achieve this feat. With a mean funky beat and bold sax breaks, this chill out is different and also exciting. Deeper bass is evident on the following track Enjoy Life, where the uplifting tones spread delight. It’s not all chilled ambient as Trust will prove, where the sampled voice of Jianda is used to great effect in balancing the bass and rhythm section. The dub inspired Waiting To Breath is followed by the finale, in which the Latin flavoured Aquira is almost at odds with the rest of the album. In just short of half an hour, I was hooked and felt perfectly at home with these chilled out vibes. My only criticism is that it did not last long enough, but this will be addressed when the full length CD is released. I hope I don’t have to wait too long? (brooky) Source: Farfield Records

Cruising on music.download.com, MusicLoad came across French Horn player Alex Brofsky’s jazz genre project entitled AB + and a sweet vocalist named Jianda who adds what is necessary to make this a beautiful track to melt into the sofa or the sand, if you are so lucky.  Alex graciously has granted MusicLoad permission to give musicload.com visitors the free mp3 download below.  Enjoy!  If you dig the sound and wish to purchase more of AB+, Alex told Musicload that he likes to people to buy at his personal CD Baby pages at www.cdbaby.com/cd/abplus2 and/or  www.cdbaby.com/cd/abplus

Om Lounge 10 Review: om10 Reviews: On the milestone 10th chapter of their coveted lounge series, Om Records introduces a new batch of burgeoning international downtempo artists making waves in the sea of underground chilled beats. Fans of Thievery Corporation, Jazzanova and Kaskade take note! The lead track from Samantha James “Rise” is a stunner with massive radio potential! But that´s not all folks, new kids like Simeon (produced by Colossus), and Gil T really hold their own with seasoned veterans like J Boogie´s Dubtronic Science and JT Donaldson. “If you´re searching for something sweet and sexy to set a sophisticated mood, don´t look any further.” – URB “Om once again redefines the boundaries of contemporary lounge with a gamut–running collection of sassy soul and dream–inducing downtempo on the spliffy, cooled out cocktail tip.” – THE EXAMINER by www.om-records.com

Download.com Review: If the French horn can be hip, then there’s still hope for the bassoonists of the world. The mellow tone of New York’s Alex Brofsky (aka AB +) brings out the sultry side of the horn that’s often hidden; the veteran jazz artist then blends it with the Jill Scott-like vocals of Jianda for a mellifluous R&B sound. – Editor, Download.com

Review by Johnny Loftus
Kinkysweet comps make up in pure imagination what they lack in memorable tunes or notable talent. Disc one of Departure Lounge features tracks from Late Night Sneaky (“Tell Me Where You Are”) and Bud Not Bombs (“Pick Up”), but in reality these are separate aliases for producers Michael Anthony and Todd Christensen. And yet, like most of the Frequent Flyer titles, Departure still tries in earnest to take you on a trip. The collection has a great central theme in its fantasy airport lounge. It’s a place where the crowd is always fluid; ideally it’s international too, and ready to unwind with a few loosened blouse buttons. Disc one sets the appropriate mood with “Golden Nectar,” where a slight hip-hop shuffle guides the breathy notes of a flute. “Inner Soul” has a bossa nova flair, and the typical global fusion of “Sunspot” dates all the way back to Banco de Gaia’s 1994 album Maya. Disc two begins with “Stayridge Terrace” from Ian Pooley, one of the bigger names on Departure. It’s a breezy track that suggests the Doobie Brothers‘ “Black Water” interpreted by ambient hip-hop kids. However, the resulting “Fuzzy Green Stop Lights” doesn’t capitalize on its evocative title, and that’s a recurring problem with this set. There are nice ideas here and there — sultry keyboard washes, meandering ethnic and hip-hop rhythms, the whisper of a pretty girl; “Desert Wind” is a late highlight — but musically speaking Departure Lounge only partly delivers on its concept, leaving the rest up to you. Which, in a way, is just like your initial conversation with that pretty flight attendant from Singapore Air.
