“My Name’s Not Red”
“Thanks to the universe for giving me this outlet. I express myself and people clap–what more could a human ask for?” – Jennifer Marks, from her self-written liner notes to “My Name’s Not Red.” Audacious, bold, and at times breathless, “My Name’s Not Red” boasts strong, driven production values and sincere, heartfelt vibrations. “I’m a coward…I’m a fool…I can’t touch you,” Marks volunteers in “I Can’t Love You.” Her clever tune “Window” turns the tables on a peeping Tom, while her soft, unassuming voice casts a delightful spell on the listener in moody, evocative cuts like “Fly” and the witty, playful anti-goody-two-shoes track “Halo.” You’ll hear twinkles of Sgt. Pepper-esque psychedelia, soaring vox and honest lyrics in these songs, all written or co-written by Ms. Marks, thank you very much. “I’m very strawberry…show me some respect,” she sings in the title track, “My Name’s Not Red.” Indeed, any self-respecting indie musician or “whimmin’s rock” devotee will do just that.
Jennifer Marks was featured in a past issue of WOMP3.
